Yorkshire Terrier Modifications

Some breeders will opt to remove the Yorkies dewclaws as some kennel clubs explicitly permits this such as the AKC and the UKC. Like many breeds a Yorkies tail is traditionally docked to a medium length and most breeders do this when they are puppies. Since the 1990s this has caused agro with many dog protection services and wants a ban on cosmetic docking as it has no benefit to the dog. In 2007 several countries banned the docking of tails including Australia, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland. However, a docked tail still remains in many of the breed standards for Yorkshire terriers. Some such as the KC have included regulations for an undocked tail saying it should be “as straight as possible; length to give a well balanced appearance”.
