Yorkshire Terrier Dogs in the UK

This cute little breed, affectionately known as ‘Yorkies’, are renowned for their loyalty and affection. Some owners keep Yorkshire terriers purely for their companionship, as they love human attention.

The breed originates in Yorkshire and it is thought the dogs were originally bred to hunt rats and mice.

The traditional Yorkshire terrier is know as a toy breed and weighs approximately 7 pounds. Their average height is only eight to nine inches. Due to their small size extra care should be taken both in and out of the home to avoid accidents. These are fragile dogs and are prone to falls.

Coat

Yorkshire terriers are distinguished by their silky blue and tan coats. As puppies they are born black, and gradually change to the deep blue of their main body coat with tan hair on their heads and faces.

A Yorkshire terrier’s hair is silky and smooth and likened to human hair. They don’t have the usual fur of a dog, so are less prone to doggy smells and shedding hair. The hair actually grows permanently and needs to be trimmed regularly – hence the famous sight of a Yorkie with a bow or band on its head. This is done for practical purposes to ensure the dog can see and its hair doesn’t go into its food or water.

Grooming is an important part of the Yorkshire terrier’s daily routine. Some owners choose to keep their terrier’s coat cut short, whilst others, particularly for show dogs, grow the hair to floor length and part it along the back.

It has been said that Yorkshire terriers are good for owners with allergies to dogs due to their type of coat.

Exercise and Care

All dogs need exercise, no matter what their size, and the Yorkshire terrier is no exception. Yorkshire terriers are ideal for homes with limited or no outdoor space as they only need a short daily walk.

This breed has a reputation for being difficult to house train. As with any dog, perseverance is needed – you will both get there in the end.

Temperament

A Yorkshire terrier will be a loyal and affectionate companion. They love to sit and be pampered (hence the nickname ‘lap dog’). Some refer to them as ‘yappy’ dogs, but all dogs bark, and they’re only defending their territory. They tend not to like strangers, which can be a good thing.

Young children and Yorkshire terriers don’t mix well. Although not intentionally, children can be far too boisterous and lively for a Yorkshire terrier to cope with. These dogs also need plenty of dedication and attention, which may be difficult if there are children in the household.

The Pampered Pooch

Many a celebrity is seen with a Yorkshire terrier under their arm or even in their handbag, almost using them as a fashion accessory. The dogs are sometimes dressed up in clothes and adorned with jewellery. Pampered pooches or lifelong companions? It’s a matter of opinion ….
